Have you taken a look at velvet lately? It has typically been a heavy-weight fabric used for more dressy, formal wear and decorative accessories.

Crushed Stretch Velvet Fabric, available at Big Z Fabric for about $7/yard, is a versatile fabric that can be used for projects both elegant and fun. Over a dozen color choices are available. Typically 54 inches wide with about 10% spandex content, its shimmery look makes it a versatile fabric that can be used for projects such as curtains, cushions, and throw pillows as well as crafting fun clothing items that adults and teens both love. It is a great fabric that works well in sergers, but can also be used on conventional sewing machines.

One easy, fun project that can be made by novices and experienced crafters alike is the hair scrunchie. Yes, it’s back! This fabric makes beautiful scrunchies with just the right amount of stretch and softness to comfortably hold and adorn hair.
Using a rectangular piece cut just 2-3 inches wide and 27 inches long (shorter if you want a less “scrunched” look), and a 5″ length of 1/4″ braided elastic, you can create your own rainbow collection of scrunchies or gift them to the ladies in your life, big and small.
